1. Articulate a philosophy of client-centered information services based on the epistemological and ethical foundations of the library and information professions.

The first lesson I learned was librarianship is not just about the books or the information within them, it is really about how people gain the knowledge found in the information, respect the creation of information, and create the best route to the information.

2. Explain and apply interdisciplinary theories and models relevant to managing library and information service agencies.

I have learned that the organization of information is much like the logical progression of patterns seen in puzzles such as Sudoku, SET, and RUSH HOUR.

3. Conduct an information needs assessment, and design and evaluate customized information services and products based on those needs.

I learned that libraries are like any other service based business. They need to predict the needs of the patrons, customize those services and always remain true to the foundation of customer service-treat each information seeker with polite respect.

4. Identify a need, then retrieve, interpret, and/or repackage relevant information resources and evaluate their use and impact.

Like any new skill the art of neutral questioning takes a lot of practice. The first key is to patiently listen to the patron in order to understand their information need. The second key is to know how to use your informational tools to retrieve the relevant information. The third key, show the patron how you did it-then they can repackage the information they way they need to.

5. Affect appropriate changes by using effective collaborative communication and organizational skills.

Perhaps one of the hardest hurdles for me to get over in graduate school is being intellectually flexible enough to articulate an idea creatively in electronic mediums and in graduate level papers. It has prepared me for the real world of librarianship where I will be expected to find relevant information and concisely repackage it for a patron, a presentation or a well written article. I will admit I am biased about using power points; I can effectively communicate an idea succinctly using text, graphs, pictures and color in an organized manner.

6. Teach information literacy skills in order to facilitate effective learning organizations.

I really like the idea of teaching users how to utilize the online catalog or show someone how to use an atlas. As a visual learner myself, I learn best by seeing and doing. However, I think it is important to have a variety of tools ready when teaching to different learners.

7. Demonstrate life-long learning skills by continually acquiring new knowledge, skills, and perspectives to respond to changing conditions.

Continuing my education by going to conferences rekindles my creative juices. Presenting at conferences builds my intellectual confidence. Working as an intern reinforces my practical side, where I build and apply skills I’ve learned in college.

8. Communicate effectively in writing, in conversation, and in using information technologies.

Thanks to the latest advances in technology, I can articulate my ideas creatively and still deliver the message.
