Archives Certificate

Director: Dr. Cecilia Salvatore. This certificate began accepting students in the fall semester of 2005. The goal of the Archives Certificate program is to prepare students for a career in an archives or special collections setting. Students learn:

ways of providing access to and preserving materials that are of enduring value and serve as the cultural memory of a society.

the uniqueness of archives materials and library special collections and the techniques and processes that are necessary to manage and maintain these materials and collections.

the diversity of the formats in which information is organized and delivered and the resulting complexity of information organization, storage,maintenance, and preservation.

In order to earn the Archives Certificate, students must be accepted into the certificate program and pass the required 18-credit hours of core classes as part of the 42-credit-hour requirements for the Master’s Degree in Library Science.The core classes for the Archives Certificate focus on archives management, recordsmanagement, preservation, historical research, and archives practicum.

Specifically,these courses are:

 LI809 Introduction to Archives (fomerly LI 856)

LI818 Arrangement and Description

LI827 Preservation Strategies

LI849 Information and Records Management

LI873 Practicum in Archives

HI863 Research Seminar
